Hiram A. Boaz was the second president of Southern Methodist University and a Methodist bishop. Most of the papers in this collection are of a personal nature: two Bibles, a Methodist hymnal, awards, medals and certificates, biographical information, and letters to his wife and children. Hiram Abiff Boaz played a crucial role in the establishment and early years of Southern Methodist University. He was a major driving force behind the idea of erecting a Methodist university in the North Texas region. Shared governance had a short life at SMU.
